MSK ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound images of the musculoskeletal system provide pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and soft tissues throughout the body. Most of the Orthopaedic Specialists and Physical Therapists rely on MRI Scanning for diagnosing the diseases of the joints. However MRI is an expensive investigation and is not easily available at most of the places. Ultrasound of the Musculo-skeletal system has unique advantages in diagnosing soft tissue injury. Ultrasound is also the choice of investigation when there is inflammation due to any injury to the tendons or the ligaments. Muscle tears and fluid collection in any joint is also visualized very nicely on ultrasound scanning. The problem with MSK ultrasound is that not many radiologists are trained in doing Ultrasound scans of the Musculo-skeletal system. Even though ultrasound centres are quite easily available but finding an MSK Specialist Radiologist is quite a challenge.

DISEASES

MSK Ultrasound is used to diagnose Tendon tear or tendonitis of the rotator cuff in the shoulder. Achilles tendon in the ankle and many other tendons throughout the body. MSK ultrasound can also diagnose any muscle tear or fluid collection in the body. Ligament strains or tears can also be visualized on MSK Ultrasound. Fluid Collection in the Bursa and the joints is also visualized very nicely on the Ultrasound Test. Muscle hernia which normally happens with the atheletes or gym goers is also better diagnosed on MSK Ultrasound. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is also the modality of choice when it comes to Ganglion Cyst and Soft Tissue Tumours - Benign or Malignant. MSK Ultrasound is of great use when MRI is not possible specially in pregnant women.
