The importance of breast scanning is increasing with time as the number of patients with breast lump and breast cancer are on the rise. Breast Cancer has strong genetic roots and every female who has a history of breast cancer in the family must stay on alert with regards to this disease. Women below the age of 40 years are advised to undergo Breast Ultrasound and not Breast Mammogram as the breasts of females in this age group are dense and therefore not very well visualized on Mammography. Exposure to radiation is another reason for avoiding Breast Mammography and opting for Breast Ultrasound. Breast Ultrasound helps in identifying the nature of the breast lump. Sound waves create the image of the lump and differentiate between a solid lump and a fluid filled cyst. Ultrasound guidance can also be used for doing Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) or Biopsy of the Breast Lump.
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the women and all the women should be doing breast self examination at regular intervals. Any breast lump, change in the shape of one of the breast, pain or nipple discharge should not be ignored and a breast specialist should be consulted immediately. Apart from Breast Cancer, breast ultrasound can detect fibrocystic breast disease, fibroadenoma - benign breast tumour, intraductal papilloma - benign tumour of milk ducts. Ultrasound has far more availability as compared to a Mammography machine. Most of the mammography machines in India are analog and do not provide quality images. Radiologists are also more comfortable in doing breast ultrasound as compared to Breast Mammogram. MRI of the Breast is also an excellent diagnostic modality for breast cancer but it is far more expensive and is not available at most of the places in the country.
Breast Ultrasound costs Rs. 1500 - 2000 at our centres in Bhiwadi. Breast Ultrasound can be done for one breast or both the breasts unlike Breast Mammogram which is always done for both the breasts. The report for Breast Ultrasound is available within 15-20 minutes of the scan being completed. Some women may not feel comfortable in getting the breast ultrasound from a male radiologist. All our centres at Bhiwadi and Bhiwadi have the availability of female radiologist for doing Breast Scans. The patient needs to get prior appointment for the availability of female radiologist. We have multiple centres in the NCR Region and you can get appointment at any of our centres by calling on the numbers +91-8800188334 / 8800188335 / 8800188336.
