Foetal Colour Doppler is done in the third trimester of the pregnancy around the 8th month. In foetal colour doppler the radiologist uses ultrasound machine with doppler features to study the blood flow in the umbilical cord which supplies nutrition and oxygen to the foetus. This study is done primarily to rule out Intra Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) and also to see the loops of cord around the neck of the foetus. This helps in determining whether the delivery would be normal or c-sec apart from several other factors. Ultrasound is the most versatile diagnostic modality when it comes to pregnant women because it has no hazardous radiation like many other radiological tests. A mother can have any number of ultrasound scans during the pregnancy without causing any harm to the health of the foetus.
The report of Foetal Colour Doppler would give information about the blood flow in the umbilical blood vessels. Lesser blood flow in these vessels could result in growth retardation in the foetus. The test also gives information about the blood flow in the placental bed. The colour doppler study would give information about the flow of blood in the uterine arteries and the foetal cerebral arteries. Normal blood flow in all these blood vessels indicate a healthy growing foetus and removes lots of worries for the expecting parents and the family. The gynaecologist is able to plan the delivery with the information about the loops or cord around the neck of the foetus. If there is more than one loop of cord around the neck then some exercises before delivery can help in delivering normally.
The cost of Obstetrical Colour Doppler is in the range of Rs. 2500 - 3500 at our different centres. Most of the radiologists are trained in doing Ultrasound Scans but not all the radiologists are comfortable in doing the colour doppler studies. Proper training and adequate experience is required for performing different types of colour dopplers. The ultrasound machine and its features also play a very important role in doing good quality colour doppler scans. Colour Doppler is actually a study of blood vessels in the body and achieves its objectives at a much lower cost than Contrast Angiography on CT Scan or MRI which also studies the flow of blood in the arteries and veins. We have multiple centres in the NCR Region and you can get appointment at any of our centres by calling on the numbers +91-8800188334 / 8800188335 / 8800188336.
