FNAC

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a test in which the surgeon draws fluid from any lump in the body using a fine needle. This fluid is then tested in the laboratory to find the nature of the cells in the fluid. This helps the doctor in determining whether the lump is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). If the lump is clearly visible from the outside then the FNAC test is done without any guidance. However many lumps in the body are deeply embedded and for doing fnac for such lumps, the surgeon would require ultrasound guidance. One of the most common uses of ultrasound guidance is in the cases of Breast Lumps. Two doctors are needed for doing ultrasound guided fnace. The Radiologist would operate the ultrasound machine and the surgeon would perform FNAC Test.

DISEASES

Ultrasound guided FNAC is used to diagnose Breast Cancer, Fibroadenoma, Tubercular Lump, Infective Etiology etc. If FNAC of the breast shows malignant celss then Biopsy is done to confirm the diagnosis. This can be followed with MRI or CT Scan of the other organs of the body to see the spread of the cancer before commencing the treatment. Whole Body PET CT Scan can also be done to stage the cancer which determines the line of treatment to be given to the patient. Ultrasound guided FNAC is therefore the first step for diagnosing any kind of lump in the body. Costing and Appointment

Ultrasound guided FNAC has three components for the cost of the test. The cost of the Surgeon would be Rs. 1250 - 1500. The cost of ultrasound guidance would be Rs. 1000 - 1500 while the cost of testing the fluid for cytology in the lab would be Rs. 750 - 1500. The total cost for the test would be Rs. 3000 - 4500. Since two doctors are required for getting the fluid from the lump, special appointment timings are given for the test depending on the availability of the surgeon and the radiologist.
